Music Industry Mourns as Multi-Hyphenate Artist Oliver Tree Dies in Tragic Brazil Helicopter Crash

The global music community is mourning the loss of American singer-songwriter, filmmaker, and internet personality Oliver Tree, who passed away on June 14, 2026, at the age of 32 following a tragic mid-air helicopter collision in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

A larger-than-life creative force, Tree was celebrated for his eccentric alternative-pop style, viral music videos, and his unforgettable, bowl-cut-sporting persona “Turbo.”

The Final Tour

At the time of his passing, Tree was in South America on his ambitious headline concert trek, billed as The World’s First World Tour. The massive undertaking was scheduled to span over 70 performances across 30 countries and all seven continents in support of his fourth studio album, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, which debuted in April 2026.

Just hours before the accident, Tree had been actively documenting his stay in Rio de Janeiro on social media—sharing videos of himself playing football and interacting with locals in a nearby favela.

According to local aviation authorities, the accident occurred around 9:00 a.m. local time over the beachside neighborhood of Recreio dos Bandeirantes when the Bell 206 JetRanger helicopter carrying Tree collided mid-air with an Aérospatiale AS350 Ecureuil. Both aircraft crashed into the parking lot of a nearby electric vehicle dealership, resulting in a severe fire. All six occupants across both helicopters perished, including Tree, pilot Alexandre Souza, Argentinian YouTuber Gaspi (Gaspar Prim Díaz), Argentinian film director Lucas A. Vignale, Brazilian music producer Lucas Frota, and pilot Charles Marsillac.

Following the tragedy, Atlantic Records and Warner Chappell Music released a joint statement honoring the 32-year-old artist:

“We are shocked and saddened by Oliver’s untimely passing. He was a remarkable talent—a gifted artist and songwriter who forged a thoroughly unique and captivating style. Oliver was endlessly inventive and a true original.”

The Rise of an Internet Icon

Born Oliver Tree Nickell in Santa Cruz, California, Tree’s unique trajectory in the entertainment industry began long before he was a household name. A true multi-hyphenate, he spent his youth as a competitive professional scooter rider before transitioning fully into the arts, later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Technology from CalArts in 2017.

While his sudden departure leaves a profound void in the pop-culture landscape, Oliver Tree leaves behind a revolutionary blueprint for how modern musicians can use internet culture to connect directly, authentically, and hilariously with fans across the globe.
